Kalari Kendram Kerala
- Kalaripayattu
A residential kalaripayattu gurukulam on a hilltop above the Kakkaya Dam reservoir near Kozhikode, the Kerala branch of Delhi's Kalari Kendram, with monthly live-in batches from 7 days and drop-in classes that travelers can join.
- The style
- Kalaripayattu in its full traditional order, Meithari, Kolthari, Ankathari and Verumkai, at the right pace and under direct watch, with the gurukkal, not a timetable, deciding when a student moves on. Sessions open with conditioning, stretching, posture work and movement sequences, and the eight animal postures are part of the training.
- Lineage
- The live-in gurukulam near Calicut is the Kerala branch of Kalari Kendram Delhi, founded in 2008.
- The teacher
- Founder Guru Shinto Mathew has more than 20 years in the art and learned both its northern and southern styles under Guru K.K. Vijayan of Calicut. He holds a research fellowship from the CCRT under India's Ministry of Culture.
